More than 50 BBQ competition teams took part in the BBQ bash competing for a total of $10,000 in cash prizes. As my Navy dad always said, Bravo Zulu Cool Smoke!

Thanks to PRSA Georgia, I got some great insights into Atlanta media today. I attended two fantastic sessions, Atlanta TV News Unplugged and Media Relations in an Online World. The first session helped me better understand how assignment desks at TV stations work, as well as how to pitch them effectively. In the second session, I heard first-hand how to improve my media relations skills by leveraging social media and everything today’s online world has to offer.

It was great to hear directly from representatives from the AJC, CNN, Reuters, WAGA, WXIA, WSB, and more. Thanks PRSA!

I got to see Tuffy Stone and Cool Smoke in action this weekend at the Dillard, Georgia BBQ & Bluegrass Festival. It was awesome! Cool Smoke’s smoker is gorgeous. I didn’t know a smoker could be gorgeous, but trust me, this thing is! And Tuffy’s BBQ was amazing – everything was delicious. I don’t even love ribs that much, but these ribs were divine. But to me, the chicken took the cake. It was the most superb BBQ chicken I’ve ever tasted. The judges agreed – Tuffy won Reserve Grand Champion, 1st place Ribs, and 4th in Brisket. Congratulations Tuffy and Cool Smoke!

He is also a great speaker and a very cool guy! I have always loved Chick-fil-A (seriously, how can you resist their original sandwich?), but now I love them even more. Hearing what Dan had to say about the Chick-fil-A brand, second mile service, and how Chick-fil-A truly tries to restore its customers with each visit, made me an even more avid fan than before. It was neat to meet him personally, too. Thanks to Jackson Spalding for arranging his visit!

Today PR guru Ellen Hartman and I conducted a media training session for the Georgia Restaurant Association. It was a great afternoon with about 10 restaurants as Ellen and I helped teach these restaurateurs how to prepare effectively, perform professionally, and truly win in interview situations. We went through the principles of media training, gave specific examples about dealing with media – from local to national, print to radio to TV and more – and most importantly, practiced. Great job to everyone involved!

On Barron’s.com today, one of my clients was quoted in Randall Forsyth’s article, “Atlas Didn’t Shrug… He’s just sitting on his hands while he confronts regulatory and tax uncertainty.”

Adrian Cronje, chief investment officer of Balentine, an investment firm based in Atlanta with $500 million under management, was quoted in today’s article, saying:

“…This uncertainty for business threatens deflation is similar to what Japan has experienced, says Adrian Cronje, chief investor for Balentine LLC, an Atlanta-based investment adviser. At any suggestion of recovery in Japan, authorities tightened monetary and fiscal policies in the 1990s, which made corporations skittish. Now, he says, the same pattern is threatened in Europe with Trichet’s urging of fiscal austerity following upticks in some indicators on the continent.

In the U.S., uncertainty about regulatory reform, the timing and sources of fiscal consolidation and reluctance of banks to lend has companies such as Intel (ticker: INTC) continue to accumulate cash rather than invest it, Cronje observes. All because of a lack of clarity in what they face in the future.

From an investment standpoint, this uncertainty (plus the increased richness of valuations) has Cronje advising Balentine’s clients to reduce risk by increasing hedged positions and trimming exposure to international equities. The exception: large-capitalization U.S. equities, which rarely have been cheaper relative to alternatives, especially small-caps…”

Here’s the link to the full article: http://online.barrons.com/article/SB50001424052970203964804575391453166193386.html?mod=BOL_hpp_dc

Great job, Adrian!

Today Glen Jackson and Bo Spalding celebrate the 15th anniversary of their successful and highly-respected PR firm, Jackson Spalding. Glen and Bo took a huge risk 15 years ago today, and it has paid off indeed! They were mavericks in the PR field then and today they still are leaders and innovators in their field. Since day one, they have stayed true to their core values:

We tell the truth.
We work hard.
We respect each other.
We work together as a team.
We are of the highest integrity.
We have fun.
We always look for a better way.
Our aim is excellence.

We are an extension of our clients. Their goals are woven with ours. Their success — and ours — are intertwined.

Likewise, we are tightly connected in a culture that celebrates teamwork and advocates professional and personal growth through mentoring and training.

Congratulations to Glen, Bo and the entire JS team!

The heat wave in Washington, D.C. did not stop the tens of thousands of BBQ fans on June 26 and June 27. Amid the 98 degree weather, Safeway’s 18th annual National Capital Barbeque Battle took place on historic Pennsylvania Avenue at 14th street, right in the heart of the museum district. The hot weather was the perfect backdrop for the hot-off-the-grill BBQ.
